Benefits of after school programs: what the research and parents say

After school programs give children supervised time to learn, move and make friends between the end of the school day and when parents get home. They also let parents keep working. In the largest US survey of families on this topic, parents of children in programs reported both benefits.

The headline numbers

The Afterschool Alliance’s America After 3PM 2025 surveyed 30,515 parents of school-age children. It found:

Finding Figure
Children currently in an afterschool program 7 million
Children who would attend if a program were available 22.6 million
Parents with an enrolled child who are satisfied with the program 95%
Parents who say programs help working parents keep their jobs or work more hours 84%
Parents of enrolled children who feel less stressed knowing their child is safe 92%

Cost and availability were the main reasons children who want a place don’t have one.

Benefits for children

  • Supervision in the hours after school. Programs cover the gap between dismissal and the end of the working day, usually until about 6 PM.
  • Life skills. More than 8 in 10 parents in the 2025 survey said programs help children build teamwork, critical thinking and leadership.
  • Engagement with school. The Afterschool Alliance points to better school attendance and engagement in learning among participants (Afterschool Alliance, Oct 2025).
  • Activities they wouldn’t get otherwise. Sports, coding, music and art. Many free school-based programs also include homework help and a snack or meal.
  • Friends and mentors. Time with peers outside class, and with adults who aren’t parents or teachers.

Benefits for parents

  • Keeping a job. 84% of parents say programs help working parents keep their jobs or work more hours.
  • Peace of mind. 92% of parents with an enrolled child say they’re less stressed knowing where their child is.
  • Homework done. Many care programs set aside time for homework, so evenings are freer.

Care programs vs enrichment classes

The benefits differ by type. After school care programs run every school day until pickup and cover supervision, homework and play. Enrichment classes such as soccer, coding or martial arts usually meet once or twice a week for an hour. They build a specific skill but don’t cover the whole afternoon. Many families combine both.
